The Surrey Five-O will be staged in conjunction with the compact World Cup programme, announced in November 2004, and replaces the previously publicised Southern 6-Day.
You can enter as few or as many of the individual days as you wish, but your best 3 scores out of Days 1-4 count for the overall prizes. The scoring system will be based on that most recently used at the Scottish Six Day competition.
All 5 days will be BOF Ranking Events.
All public races will start shortly after completion of the World Cup races, giving you an opportunity to support your national team before competing.
More details on the locations of the races and the World Cup itself can be found in Bulletin 2.5
VENUES and TERRAIN
Day 1 Fri 29 April - Surrey University Campus, Guildford
A new orienteering area featuring a complex mix of buildings and parkland on the slopes of a hill crowned by Guildford Cathedral.
Sprint race; the emphasis is on quick decision-making. Most classes will run World Cup courses which have a recommended winning time of less than 15 minutes.
Start times: early evening.
Day 2 Sat 30 Apr - Mytchett & Old Windmill Hill
A military training area comprising mature conifer woodland to the south, with deciduous areas in the north west. Runnability will be good. There are zones of contour detail within the maximum height differential across the competition area of 50 metres.
Middle races; emphasis on the use of technical terrain. The maximum course length will be less than 7km and shorter courses will be reduced in length proportionally.
Start times: pm.
Day 3 Sun 1 May - Winterfold, Pitch Hill & Holmbury Hill
The area runs along the Greensand ridge to the east of Guildford and comprises generally fast, mature woodland, with bilberry undergrowth. It features a steep, south-facing scarp slope, backed by gentler gradients to the north. Isolated sections of interesting landform detail associated with past quarrying activities.
Long race; emphasis on route choice. Course lengths will follow National Event guidelines.
Start times: early pm.
Day 4 Mon 2 May - Battersea Park, south west London
An ornamental city park with many artificial features, bordering the south bank of the River Thames.
Sprint race; most classes will run World Cup courses which have a recommended winning time of less than 15 minutes.
Start times early pm.
Day 5 Tue 3 May - Leith Hill South-West
Mostly runnable, mixed deciduous woodland, with interesting detail in the south, and many areas of contour features. Leith Hill is the highest point in South East England.
Middle races; emphasis on the use of technical terrain. The maximum course length will be less than 7km and shorter courses will be reduced in length proportionally. Recommended winning time for the World Cup courses is 30 minutes.
Start times: early pm.
