1. Introduction
The Middle Distance Races will be held in the forests of the Surrey Hills, on the north-western slopes of Leith Hill, 15km to the south-east of Guildford. Leith Hill is the highest point in South-East England and the views from Leith Hill Tower on a clear day are exceptional. Like Winterfold and Holmbury, it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Leith Hill has been used for several major orienteering events in the past 20 years and provides a technical challenge to all orienteers.
The competition is being held on land owned by The Wotton Estate and the landowner, Mr Evelyn, and land agent, Philip Trower, have been very supportive of orienteering for many years. We are indebted to them and to the tenant farmer, Laurence Matthews, who has kindly provided the Race Arena.
2. Terrain
Landforms - The terrain is located between 230m and 300m above sea level and consists of a north-west facing slope with gentle re-entrants and spurs. There is a steeper slope to the east of the competition area to a deep valley. The southern part of the area is very detailed due to past mining activity.
Vegetation - Mainly mature deciduous forest with some younger trees (coniferous or holly covering approximately 10-15% of the area). Some low vegetation that may impede runnability is present in the south-east of the area: this is marked with a green stripe (symbol 407). Mapped thickets are usually areas of rhododendron bushes.
Ground - Generally sandy leading to mainly fast running conditions underfoot. No rocky areas are present.
Visibility - Generally very good, except in areas of younger trees.
Roads and paths - There is an extensive path network. As the area is well used by the public, particularly mountain bikers, many small paths can appear. These have been mapped where distinct.
3. Map
The map has been produced by Stirling Surveys. It is approximately A4 size (21 x 30cm), at 1:10,000 scale with 5 metre contour intervals.
There is one special symbol: a black circle represents a circular concrete construction.
