An icy cold water-splash in Guildford's Stoke Park was a shock to the system for some of the World's top orienteers on Friday. Early morning snow - rare in this part of England - may have made members of Norway's Bækkelagets club feel at home, but by the afternoon, the only relic of the snow was soggy ground and a chilly straight route from control six to seven! Led by World Champions Hanne Staff and Björnar Valstad, now retired from international competition, the Norwegians joined the GB Squad for their latest training camp, in preparation for the forthcoming GB Round of the World Cup. After a morning training session near Bracknell, an invitation to press and public to see the GB Squad in action in Stoke Park attracted a small, but fascinated crowd including a reporter from the Surrey Advertiser who interviewed athletes and coaches.
Retiring afterwards to the warm haven of The Spectrum Leisure Centre, which is to be the Event Centre for the World Cup, Björnar Valstad admitted to avoiding the water-splash, so as not to risk tightening up precious calf muscles. Norwegians and British alike felt the training camp was extremely useful in developing familiarity with Surrrey terrain and maps - and ponds!
