The Sprint Qualification will be held on the Campus of the University of Surrey and the grounds of Guildford Cathedral. The University is built on a hillside leading up to Guildford Cathedral. The campus is compact and comprises many modern buildings, playing fields, landscaped grounds and a lake. The cathedral dominates the town and its grounds together with the University Campus make the area an ideal venue for a sprint race. We are grateful to the University of Surrey and to the Cathedral for the use of the areas and facilities.
2. The Terrain
The terrain comprises a mix of complex buildings and parkland, all on a slope with a height difference of 30m.
3. The Map
The map has been produced by Stirling Surveys. It is approximately A4 size (21x30cm), at 1:4,000 scale with 2.5 metre contour intervals as approved by the IOF Event Adviser. The map is drawn in accordance with the International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps (ISSOM) Final Draft 2004. Competitors should ensure they are familiar with the symbols for passable and impassable fences, walls and bodies of water.
The area includes thousands of concrete steps. These are impossible to map. The only flight of steps marked on the map is a distinctive metal staircase.
A black circle on the map (symbol 539) is used to represent a statue or sculpture.

Marshals will be present on the courses. However, there will be many members of the public in the competition area and competitors should take appropriate care.
5. Travel to and from the race
Journey time from the Event Centre to the Campus should be between 5 and 15 minutes but is very dependent on the traffic conditions and these are likely to be very heavy both in town and on the A3 on the Friday afternoon.
6. Departure Time of Official Transport from The Spectrum
Coaches will leave the Spectrum at 1545 and 1615.
7. Return Time of Official Transport from the Race Arena
Coaches will leave at 1930 from the point where passengers were dropped.
8. Travel Directions
From the Spectrum car park, turn right and follow the signs and join the A3 towards Portsmouth. Within 300m of joining the A3, leave the A3 at the next exit, following the signs to the University (entrance at OS sheet 186; GR 981501).
9. Car Park
Competitors should park in Car Park 1, which is on the left at the Security Office at the entrance to the Campus. Competitors should arrive after 1530 and immediately go to check-in in the UniSport Centre - across the road from the car park
Non-competing team members and others should park as directed in the huge car parks on the campus. It should be easier to find parking spaces after 1600 and, for this reason, visitors are requested not to arrive before that time. It will be a short walk to the Race Arena from these car parks.
10. The Race Arena
The arena is situated on the modern piazza in front of the Austin Pearce Building. Food and drinks will be available for sale close to the Arena until 20:00.
11. The Start Location and Procedure
After Registration, competitors must remain within the warm up area until their time to enter the pre-start. A sample of the control arrangement will be on display. The facilities within the Sports Centre (including showers) will be available to competitors before the races and after the last start. The Start itself is on the edge of the Race Arena.
12. Crossings Points
There are two marked road crossings on the main road through the area. Competitors must cross at these points, which are both next to controls. Both will be marshalled. There are several other minor roads throughout the area. Traffic will be light and travelling at low speed. Competitors may cross these roads anywhere but should take care.
A hedge separates the Campus from the Cathedral. This must only be crossed at the two marked crossing points.
13. Spectator Control
There is a spectator control on the edge of the Race Arena and several other controls nearby. Spectators and the general public will be allowed to move freely around the Campus during the competition. Everyone is asked not to impede nor to hinder competitors and not to obstruct the controls.
14. Finish
